Mission Trips

Southern Baptist volunteers on short-term mission trips play an important role in our strategy. If you or your church feel that God is calling you to be on mission with Him in Mexico, we would love to dialogue with you. Having served as Minister of Missions for five years at our local church in the U.S., we have experience with mission trips outside the country. We'd be happy to answer any questions you might have concerning your trip to Sonora. All our volunteer teams are from SBC churches and are led by Southern Baptists.

Prime time for mission trips to Sonora is from October until early June. Due to our desert climate and hot temperatures, we do not advise volunteer teams to plan trips from mid-June through September. Please allow 2 to 6 months for the necessary planning and preparations for a Mexico mission trip.

2008 Update! A passport is now required of all American citizens traveling to Mexico. One of the first steps you should take in your mission trip planning is obtaining passports for all trip participants. No exceptions are made to this rule. For more information see the State Department website at www.travel.state.gov

We recommend that before planning a mission trip you obtain and read three books:

The Great Omission by Steve Saint. This book describes the long-term effects of short-term mission trips and helps On-Mission Christians avoid some of the pitfalls and problems associated with such trips.

Prayerwalking, Praying Onsite with Insight by Steve Hawthorne and Graham Kendrick. This book describes the process of prayerwalking and how prayer is a vital part of the missionary process.

Church Planting Movements by David Garrison. This book describes the International Mission Board global strategy for planting churches. It is a good overview of our task, our goals, and our methods.
